 The Far North• Sami culture Come and experience the fascinating Sami culture on the vast mountain plateau in Finnmark in the far north of Norway. Learn about their nomadic lifestyle and hear stories of Sami mysticism and magic. In winter, you can ride on a reindeer-drawn sleigh or snow scooter, gaze at the millions of stars visible up here in the Arctic north, marvel at the Northern Lights, sit round the fire in a traditional lavvo tent, and eat traditional Sami food. And/or you can visit small, working fishing villages; take a trip in a boat along the coast and see fantastic rock formations, seals and seabirds, go ocean fishing and hear about the hardships of life on the Barents Sea. Kirkenes is worth a visit in its own right. It hosts a seldom melange of Russian, Finnish, Norwegian and Sami culture. This is a region marked by enormous contrasts in landscape and culture. In Alta (in the summer and autumn), you can see the huge area of ancient rock carvings, and in Kautokeino we will take you to visit jewelry designers who will tell you about traditional Sami jewelry and modern silver jewelry – inspired by local nature. Finnmark offers unique experiences all year round. The Arctic region is especially fascinating in winter. The blue light of the Arctic night that lasts from November to February is magical. This is also when the Northern Lights are strongest. As the year progresses, the days get longer, the birds return to the coast to brood, and the spring fishing season starts. Nature bursts into life, and all of a sudden it is summer and time for the midnight sun. The cloudberries are in flower and salmon return to the rivers. Then comes autumn, time to pick berries and mushrooms, and time to bring the dried cod indoors on the coast. Everyone and everything is getting ready for the long winter hibernation.
