The Viking Trail

• The history of the Vikings
• Guided archaeological tours
• The spectacular fjords of Western Norway
• The Coastal Express

Ottar was a ninth-century Viking chieftain and merchant. His visit to King Alfred of England testifies to his many feats and expeditions and is an important historical document.

Our tour follows several of Ottar’s journeys and provides a fantastic opportunity to experience Norway or the “way north” as the Vikings called it. A unique, varied trip of a lifetime.

We start in Oslo, with a visit to the Viking Ship Museum, which houses the best preserved Viking longboats in the world. In Selje, in the notorious Stadhavet Sea, we follow in the footsteps of the martyred St Sunniva. Outside Trondheim, we visit a living museum where they still build boats the way the Vikings did. You will also have the opportunity to sail in a longboat with a real square sail.

The Lofoten islands were an important power base in Viking times. There we will visit the famous Viking museum Lofotr. You will be invited to eat at the chieftain’s table where the smell of tar is overpowering and the flames from the lanterns flicker and cast dancing shadows.

This program is best in the period May to October, and especially in spring and early autumn. Contact us for more details or suggestions for a personalized trip!
